Buckeyes lost another one of our own yesterday with the passing of Dr. Don Steinberg, one of the dwindling surviving members of the '42 National Championship Team. I first met Dr. Steinberg on the field in Ohio Stadium, when OSU honored the team on the 65th anniversary of their championship. As a result of that day I would go on to meet and/or visit with Don, Chuck Csuri, Gene Fekete, Dante Lavelli, and Bill Willis. What a thrill it was to be in the company of such giants.
Of course Don wrote Expanding Your Horizons: Collegiate Football's Greatest Team, the stories of the amazing lives of the '42 Champions. We had lunch one day and Don shared with me all about that project and his Buckeye history. He shared something else that was amazing too. Our lunch was soon after my mother had had life saving emergency surgery. When I shared with Don what they did, well, turns out as a young resident in Brooklyn New York, he had been a pioneer in the technique they used to save my mother!
If you have not read Expanding Your Horizons,, well try to find a use copy on the net. Those guys were truly The Greatest Generation, and there will never again be a group that collectively came from such modest beginnings, yet accomplished so much, not only on the football field, but in life. You will be moved by their stories.
Rest in peace, Dr. Steinberg
