I heard Bob Hunter wrote in the Dispatch today that Coach Tressel's supporters were dwindling. Sorry Bob, but I'm not one in that category.
Others may want to throw the man under the bus, but as for me he still has my faith, support, admiration, and confidence. No, it's not because he wins games. No, it's not because I am blind that some mistakes were made. No, it is not because I am not disappointed. But I have sat one on one with the man in his office, have followed him closely, have talked with his players, know his family and his friends. And I believe he tries to live his beliefs and stand for what is right as well as any coach at that level can.
I was taping an interview of my wise old coach friend a couple weeks ago. We were talking about someone else, entirely unrelated, and by chance he made the well worn descriptive comment, "There was only one person who ever walked the face of this earth that was perfect, and we crucified him." Seems most appropriate today.
I got up yesterday and read a couple of the news columns. When I saw the tone of stuff, said that's enough for me. Didn't even click on the other 4 or 5 papers I usually read. Saw an ESPN headline. Didn't click on that. Same for SI. Drove to Columbus. Enjoyed not listening to WTVN or Mike and Mike, or any of the talking heads ranting and raving. The peace and quiet was blissful, and the satisfaction of not giving the papers an advertising click was delightful .
Let those who are without fault go ahead and cast all the stones. That doesn't include me. This too will pass. We will weather this. Sure, Coach will take a bunch of hits as will the university. It's disappointing, unfortunate. But both will overcome and emerge stronger for it.
As for me, I'm moving on to basketball, right after I send Coach a note of support and encouragement.
