If you were fortunate enough to land a one-on-one interview with Archie Griffin, what would you ask?
That's my quandary this morning as I prepare for our meeting tomorrow in his office at the Lonaberger House. Actually, quandary is a poor word choice. Opportunity is a much better one.
I already know what I am going to ask. We will be discussing Archie's good friend, mentor, and role model, the man who is the subject of my other book project. But knowing what to ask and knowing how to properly ask it are as different as, well, scaling Mt. Everest compared to climbing the hill in Mirror Lake Holler.
Thus, this morning I am pondering the nuances of each word in my carefully crafted questions... how best to ask this, should we touch on that, and where does the other fit in the scheme of all we need to cover.
This meeting started in a photo line in the French Field House at the Ag Alumni Fall fest. Archie was giving pictures and when my turn came, as the photographer was focusing I turned to Arch and said, "I'm the guy doing the book about....."
Archie's eyes got big as saucers. "I'm so glad someone is doing that," he said. "He has so much wisdom to share with our young people." His interest was genuine.
Archie just took off on the subject and we talked about my project, until finally his handler said to me, "We do have other people waiting." As she led him away to the next photo, Archie told me to let him know what he could do to help.
I did. He is.
It's gonna be fun. One very wise man, sharing insight about another. I am a lucky guy.
