My previous post Trolling for Stories tells how I find contacts and sources. I have good naturedly compared it to fishing ... you cast 25 times and on the 26th cast maybe you catch a story. Last night I made a 26th cast and hooked a lunker!!!
Skipping supper, I left work at 5:00 and drove 2 hours to Columbus for a meeting at the Woody Hayes Center. Upon leaving the building (around 8 PM) I struck up a conversation with a very gracious and kind gentleman who, it turns out, started going to Ohio Stadium in 1932 and rarely missed a game for a 60 year period!! One thing led to another and soon he and I sat down on a bench in front of the Center and in the dark turned on the tape recorder. It was going on 10:00 when I finally turned it off. By then the Woody Hayes was dark, ours were the only two cars left in the lot, and it was just the crickets, the mosquitoes, and us (except for the security patrol who asked what we were doing)!
It was after midnight and well after this old geezer's bedtime when I arrived back home but I would have gone to the end of the earth for this one.
Can you imagine 8 decades of watching games in the Horseshoe? Wow! An hour and half of tape and we are not done yet....
